Heat

Hot compresses are the mainstay of managing MGD. They help liquify the meibum oil in blocked gland ducts. There are many different types available from microwaveable bags to USB-powered electronic devices.

Massage

Gently massaging the eyelids after heating helps express the essential meibum oils and gets them flowing into the tears. This can be done manually or with a massaging device, your eye care professional will show you how to do this effectively.

Cleanse

A rigorous daily cleansing of the eyelids is essential to remove debris. Additionally, a medicated cleanser will prevent the proliferation of potentially harmful organisms such as demodex.

Antimicrobial

Regular use of an antimicrobial spray specially formulated for the delicate eyelid and surrounding skin, will reduce the inflammation caused by bacterial over-load.

Hydrate

The use of artificial tears (dry eye drops) is usually the first line of defence. Care must be taken to select an eye drop that targets your type of dry eye and is free from preservatives.

Supplements

If your diet needs support, dry eye-formulated oral supplements containing anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as omega-3, may be advocated.

You will be advised on the most suitable management schedule using the unique Circle-of-Care model.
